Paperwork #97 (transmute), 2024

Description: “transmute” is from Ana María Caballero’s Paperwork series, a performance-based, generative AI collection of digital paper sculptures carved from emotional responses to Caballero’s spoken-word poetry.

In 2023, Caballero performed across the globe and invited audience members to participate in the creation of a collaborative new series by leaving behind their responses. Caballero then created different generative AI algorithms that honored the cities where her performances occurred, rooting the works in the architectural elements of each place.
This collection conveys poetry’s ability to store and transfer memory. Nothing is more meaningful than the ephemeral experiences that linger within us, bringing flashes of connection to our lives. Paperwork celebrates the significance of moments shared with others and the renewed cultural currency afforded to poetry via digital transactability.

In 2024, Caballero presented an exciting expansion: physical sculptures. Two artist-owned works, “momento” and “transmute”, have been cast as three dimensional objects, furthering Caballero’s explorations of the permanence and materiality of verse. Only six physical sculptures are brought to life.
