CryptoPunk #7881, 2017

Larva Labs (Matt Hall b. 1974 & John Watkinson b. 1975), 2017
Description: CryptoPunks is a pioneering interactive art project on the Ethereum blockchain: 10,000 unique pixel characters such as humans, apes, zombies, and aliens, algorithmically generated and permanently inscribed on-chain. The project began with a question: could collecting digital items feel as real as physical collectibles? In 2017, when the project was created, the term 'NFT' did not yet exist and there were no established rules for how digital art could exist on a blockchain. Hall and Watkinson built their own system from scratch, modifying the fungible token standard and embedding a decentralized marketplace directly in the smart contract. Originally free to claim for anyone with an Ethereum wallet, all 10,000 Punks were claimed within eight days. CryptoPunks inspired the ERC-721 standard that powers most digital art and collectibles today, and is now held in the permanent collections of MoMA, ICA Miami, Centre Pompidou, and LACMA.
