U.S. equities ended mixed as tech weakness—triggered by Oracle’s heavy AI capex and soft earnings—drove sector rotation into non-tech. The S&P 500 and blue-chip indices hit record highs and Treasuries rallied after the Fed’s rate cut and bill-purchase announcement.
The U.S. trade deficit shrank to $52.8 billion in September from a revised $59.3 billion in August, reflecting a sharp increase in the value of exports, with economists having expected the trade deficit to widen to $63.3 billion.
First-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits rebounded by more than expected in the week ended December 6th, rising to 236,000, an increase of 44,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 192,000, with economists having expected jobless claims to climb to 220,000.
