Thomas Noya

The Venezuelan visual artist Thomas Noya navigates the space between “the ethereal and the compulsive” through generative algorithms and machine learning.

A digital-native, Noya has always had an affinity for digital art; his first drawings as a child on the computer, later brought him to pursue his studies at the University of London in Digital Arts Computing. His academic courses provided him with a first window into generative art and coding, a field that he will soon fall in love with.

His work, often abstract, juggling between the subjective and distortion, incorporates nostalgic elements reminding the audience of his early computer graphics days, a focus reflected by his 2023 project “Desde Lejos” with Bright Moments.

For his series “CYMATIC: Patterns of Pentatonic”, in collaboration with Erika Weitz, the artist combines his code with the wet plate printing process. A custom code-driven system that simulates the pentatonic scale’s associated Chladni patterns. A dialogue that transcends the digital and physical.

“What really interests me about generative systems is the idea of creating a core structure that has its own agency. It’s like a conversation between you and the system.” © Thomas Noya for Fxhash
