Jonas Lund

Swedish artist Jonas Lund roots his creations, whether paintings, sculptures, photography, websites and performances in the critical reflection of contemporary networked systems and power structures of control.

After his bachelor in photography, Jonas Lund committed to the medium, before moving into «net art» (art that uses the internet as its medium), which allowed for more liberty in his creative process. Following a Master that focused on network-based culture, Jonas fully dived into this medium, driven by its instantaneity and speed as well as its alignment with contemporary culture. Creating systems and setting up parameters that oftentimes require engagement from the viewer, Jonas’ performative artworks give lieu to tasks that are executed according to algorithms or a set of rules. Through his works, Lund investigates the latest issues generated by the increasing digitalisation of contemporary society like authorship, participation and distribution of agency while also questioning the mechanisms of the art world, the production process, authoritative power and the art market.

“It’s very difficult, probably impossible, to quantify value in any meaningful way beyond market value, which is also what makes art truly magical. The impossibility of finding a definitive formula for what makes an artwork good, bad, great, or fantastic, is one of the few things left that can’t be hyper-optimized and quantified by automatic processes.”, Jonas Lund
