Fatimah Hossaini

ABS Artist Profile Fatimah Hossaini

The Iranian-born Afghan artist and curator is an accomplished photographer and activist for women’s rights. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Photography from the University of Tehran—her second degree, after one in Industrial Engineering—Fatimah chose to return to Afghanistan to teach at the Art Faculty of Kabul University, a city she eventually picked as the setting for her initial photographs. This backdrop, merged with her advocacy for women’s and refugee rights, led to the development of a practice that immortalises her roots and the diversity of her cultural heritage through portrait and staged photography. Her art style is characterised by vibrant colours and powerful narratives around identity and femininity in Afghanistan, showcased on both national and international platforms.

Fatimah’s work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions and art festivals worldwide. Moreover, she has attracted attention from major media outlets such as BBC, The Guardian, and Bloomberg. She has also been recognised for her commitment to research and the arts with the Hypatia International Award and has regularly collaborated with the United Nations.

“By telling untold stories, I can give [these women] a voice.”, Fatimah Hossaini.
