Andreas Gysin

Andreas Gysin (also known as ertdfgcvb) is a Swiss-born artist, renowned for his innovative work in code and design. Cultivating a fascination from an early onset for image creation that goes beyond possibilities offered by traditional tools, Gysin soon found himself exploring the fields of coding to generate images. Then came animation, and later his engagement in the journey of generative art.

His trademark is ASCII art, an encoding standard that is characterized by a 7-bit character set that includes punctuation, lower and higher cases, as well as digits and symbols. An artstyle where minimalism meets text and typewriter art in a tradition that predates computers.

Often collaborating with Sidi Vanetti, their research often explores the tangible and intangible. Hardware that has a specific function, and pieces not originally made for art, and software that completes it and evolves within the limits set by the physical object on which it is integrated.  An exploration of the relationship between the digital and physical worlds, through the use of algorithms, electronics, and mechanical components.

Today, Gysin’s work spans various mediums, including interactive installations, kinetic sculptures, and generative art.
